The Star of Vergina is a solar symbol that appears in ancient Greek art. Also known as the Vergina Sun, the Macedonian Star, or the Argead Star, it’s not clear whether the star was used as a royal symbol, a religious symbol representing the Olympian gods, or just as a simple decorative design. Sixteen and eight pointed suns were used on Greek art, armor, shields, and coins as early as the 6th century BC. This symbol was designated as the official national symbol of Greece in 1993
